What to Expect at this year’s AJ Bell Great South Run
The AJ Bell Great South Run weekend is back for another spectacular celebration of running.
With over 25,000 runners taking part across the weekend, whether you’re there for the fast, flat, and fun 5K, the Junior and Mini Kids Event, or the headline event – our world-famous 10 miler – this year’s event promises to be even more incredible – so read on to find out what’s in store…
Breathtaking views and iconic landmarks
We’re world-famous for a reason. Stunning running takes on new meaning for a 10-mile race that’s packed with panoramic coastal views, miles of glorious seafront and iconic landmarks. Think Southsea Castle, HMS Victory, Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard and more.
An atmosphere like no other
Nothing gets your legs pumping like some live music. And that’s not all: we’ve also got sound systems, charity cheer squads, and incredible local support lined up along the route to keep a smile on your face – and to keep those feet pounding the pavement.
A super Saturday build-up
Veterans and newbies alike love our fast and flat Saturday 5k – it’s the perfect way to kick off a weekend of Portsmouth running. There’s also the Junior (9-15) and Mini (3-8) Great South Run to give running stars of the future a taste of the big event experience. Ready, steady, FUN! (oops, that should be RUN!).
Sustainable initiatives
We’re working to keep the Great South Run classy, not trashy. As well as organising event day clothing collections, we’re asking all runners to Drink, Drain, Aim, and use the Aqua Pura recycling stations on the route. You can also bring your unwanted shoes with you on race day and drop them at the Jog On collection point to keep them out of landfill.
Running a unique distance
The AJ Bell Great South Run is often described the world’s favourite 10-miler. Why? Well, maybe because the coastal views take some beating, and the sea breeze starts to feel very welcome a few miles in. Or maybe it’s because 10 miles is an unusual – even rare – distance, and the Great South Run’s flat course gives runners of all abilities the chance to score a new PB.
Shiny medal and snazzy t-shirt
The best thing about taking part in an event is the “I did it!” sense of achievement – but the bragging rights are a close second. Every runner also receives a shiny, specially-designed medal, an (optional) souvenir t-shirt and a goody bag packed with treats and freebies. And for the second year, all runners will have medals hung around their necks for the full finish line experience. It’s your Mo Farah moment.
Being part of a legacy event
There’s a lot of love – and a whole lotta legacy – behind the AJ Bell Great South Run. It’s been a staple event on the South Coast for over 30 years and thousands of local supporters turn out to cheer the runners on. Come and experience the electric atmosphere for yourself!
Charities and fundraising
Each year, everyday heroes determined to make a difference raise thousands of pounds for worthy causes. Expect a sea of colourful charity running tops, cheer stations aplenty and a whole lot of emotions. Not all heroes wear capes – some of them wear running shoes.
A finish line party
You’ve done it! 10 miles is an incredible achievement – but the fun doesn’t end at the finish. Cross the line and soak up the beats from the live DJ, before heading on to the Après Run zone for the complete after-party experience. Expect delicious food, refreshing drinks and even more music.
The AJ Bell Great South Run SOLD OUT this year. If you missed out, sign up to our 2025 reminder here and we’ll let you know when entries open.
