Waze Partners With The Great Run Company
Waze, the free, real-time crowdsourced traffic and navigation app with more than 100 million active users, has announced that it has entered into a partnership with The Great Run Company. The UK’s biggest mass participation sports events series will join the Waze Global Event Partner Scheme taking the programme to over 200 partners worldwide.
As part of the partnership, The Great Run Company will use Waze technology and outreach to improve traffic flow during events. During peak times, The Great Run Company events can result in up to 300 junctions of road closures, causing potential for people driving through towns or cities to encounter disruption. The partnership with Waze will help to ensure that Waze maps are updated with closures and reroute drivers, without causing disruption.
By becoming a Global Event Partner, The Great Run Company will help to ensure that both competitors and the general public will be able to use Waze technology to avoid the closures and continue their journeys. A further benefit is that The Great Run Company will be able to monitor traffic conditions near the event with Waze Traffic view tool and manage road closures in real-time, in the event of any changes.
Commenting on the partnership, Rebecca Resnick, Waze’s Localisation Manager said: “While planned diversions added to the Waze map help to redirect drivers around closures for sporting events, Waze’s Global Event Partner Scheme helps drivers to find alternative routes around road closures and event-related traffic, helping to ease congestion on roads that may otherwise see increased traffic. The Great Run Company shares Waze’s vision of helping to provide drivers with the information they need when driving around. We’re proud that The Great Run Company is one of our 200 plus Global Event Partners.”
Joe Milner, Senior Events Manager of The Great Run Company added: “Partnering with Waze enables us to provide clear information to participants of our races as well as the public on any road closures around our events. The Waze platform not only allows us to upload and share the road closures but also gain important data on routes participants have taken when traveling to events. We look forward to working with Waze and help shape the app going forwards to give the best information to our audience.”
The Great Run Company deliver some of the UK’s most iconic mass participation events, to over 250,000 participants a year, their flagship event, the world famous Simplyhealth Great North Run, is the world’s biggest half marathon and shown live on the BBC. Their portfolio stretches from Aberdeen to Portsmouth and also includes the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run, the UK’s biggest 10K, and the Simplyhealth Great South Run.
