UK Athletics and the Great Run Company announce UKA 5km Road Championships to take place on Great North Run Weekend

Christmas Entries Open Soon Sitewide

UK Athletics and The Great Run Company are delighted to announce that the UK Athletics 5K Road Championships will take place on Great North Run weekend on Friday 9 September 2022 at the Quayside in Newcastle.

As UK Athletics continues to review its UK Championships offering across all off-track events from the end of 2022 and 2023 onwards, the announcement of this first of its kind fixture is a key commitment in our road running calendar.

With a £10,000 prize pot offered by UKA across the men’s and women’s races, a maximum of 30 invited athletes will contest the Championship at the iconic road running venue in the north-east.

After the initial staging of the event in September 2022, there is a view for the UK Athletics 5K Road Championships event in 2023 to act as a Trial for those vying for selection to the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the inaugural World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia which will be held 30 September – 1 October 2023.

This will be an invitational event and the qualification process will follow shortly.

UKA, as part of its road series review and planning, are also looking into the opportunities for para specific events as well as those integrated wherever possible.

Mark Munro, Chief Operating Officer at UK Athletics, said, “We have committed to reviewing our UK championships for off-track events, and we are pleased to be announcing this partnership with The Great Run Company to host the UK Athletics 5K Road Championships at this event in September.

“With the inaugural World Athletics Road Running Championships following in 2023, we are keen to establish the Championships over the next few years, so it becomes a key part of the UK athletics calendar in the future for our endurance athletes.”

Paul Foster Chief Executive of the Great Run Company said,” We’re delighted to be able to host this exciting event as part of the Great North Run weekend.

“The Great Run Company is committed to supporting the development of athletics in the UK and we think this will be a fantastic addition to the calendar.

“The North East is a hotbed of grassroots athletics talent and we’re sure the athletes will receive a warm welcome from supporters and spectators as they compete on the iconic NewcastleGateshead Quayside in September.”
