Where to go to celebrate smashing the Great South Run

Brooks Ghost Banners

Great South Run veterans know exactly what we mean when we talk about that finish line feeling. It’s hard to describe, but impossible to forget. If you’re preparing to line up on the Clarence Esplanade start line for the very first time, you’ve got so much to look forward to.

But whether this is your first or your fifteenth Great South Run, one thing is certain: after you have hung that medal round your neck and you’ve taken a proud (and perhaps slightly sweaty) selfie, you’re going to want to celebrate. Hey, you deserve it.

No need to worry: we’ve got the perfect after-party waiting for you just beyond the finish line. The Après Run Zone is jam-packed with food and drink stalls, music and plenty of seating to kick back, relax and absorb the atmosphere with family and friends.

Later on, though, you might want to head on somewhere else – but where? Well, Portsmouth’s seafront is the ideal place to track down some foodie treats or a drink or two, with chippies, ice cream vendors and cafés galore. And even better – you don’t have to walk very far to find them!

So, let’s get to it: our top five recommendations of places to go in a 15-minute radius of The Great South Run finish line:

  • Chippies don’t come any closer than much-loved chain Deep Blue on South Parade Pier. With sea views and lashings of salt and vinegar, what more do you need after 10 miles – or even 5K?
  • The Garden Southsea boasts a beautiful garden and indoor glasshouse, so you’ll feel close to nature wherever you sit. Discover their woodfired pizza oven, substantial vegan menu and a choice of coffee, cocktails and more on the drinks menu.
  • And almost next door, you’ll find the Florence Arms – a gastro pub serving traditional British mains and afternoon teas. Dog-friendly and established for decades, it won’t disappoint.
  • Or you could replenish some carbs at Meat and Barrel, which serves up burgers, dirty fries, mac and cheese and more. If the menu doesn’t have you licking your lips you should probably worry…
  • Or you could try Nicholsons – another Portsmouth casual dining favourite. Tempted by tapas? Customers rave about Nicholsons’ small plates and big, feel-good vibes.

We can’t wait to see you, Portsmouth! The countdown is ON!
