Seven Things to Expect at the Great North 10K

Brooks Ghost Banners

With its warm Geordie welcome, stunning river views, and a dash of July weather (fingers crossed!) the AJ Bell Great North 10k is a highlight of our running year. But if you’re a first-timer, what can you expect? Our guide tells you everything you need to know.

Ready, set, let’s run!

Something BIG

The Great North 10k is growing each year, and regularly attracts 6,000 runners. But rest assured: like all Great Run Series events, it’s super-inclusive, so whether it’s your first run, or your fiftieth, you’ll be made to feel very welcome.

Event Day Tips

Keep the celebrations going at the Great North 10k

The Great North 10k shares the same iconic start line as its big sister, the Great North Run, beginning on the central reservation close to Newcastle University. If you’re thinking about trying a half marathon – perhaps even THE half marathon, i.e. the Great North Run – it’s a great way to test it out.

Summer running

There are no weather guarantees – this is Britain, after all. But the Great North 10k’s July date always makes us feel a bit more hopeful than usual. Fingers crossed for blue skies, a sprinkle of sunshine and some glorious summer running.

Local heroes

Our partnership with the Newcastle United Foundation is going strong, and many of our runners choose to support this fantastic cause, raising aspirations and providing opportunities across the North East. Prepare to see plenty of black and white running tops – and other charity colours, too!

Iconic views

See a side of the North East you’ve never seen before. The Great North 10k will bring you past Grey’s Monument, Northumbria University and the Civic Centre before finishing on the Town Moor behind Exhibition Park. And you’ll make your way over the Tyne Bridge not once, but twice. Want more route info? Check it out here.

A party atmosphere

Get ready for incredible supporters, cheer zones and crowd-pleasing tunes all the way round. After all, it wouldn’t be a Great Run without entertainment at every turn.

An incredible finish-line feeling

Once you’ve crossed that finish line, you’ll receive your medal and finisher t-shirt with an exclusive design inspired by the North East. Add them to your collection and enjoy your bragging rights with every wear!
