Know what to expect – your Great South Run route

Brooks Ghost Banners

We are never tired of saying it, The AJ Bell Great South Run is probably the world’s most beautiful (and best-loved) 10 miler. With plenty of history, sea views and salty air, it’s one to remember . Plus, the locals are out in full force to cheer runners on, and the atmosphere is electric from start to finish. It’s no wonder 99% of Great South Runners say they’d recommend it.

A lot of that magic is down to that 10 mile distance and the sights and landmarks you’ll see on your way round. But knowing your route is much more than anticipating when to say ‘Ooo!” and ‘Aaah!’; it’s about preparing for the twists and turns, uphill’s and downhills along the way – and harnessing that knowledge for your best run ever.

So read on to find out what to expect from your Great South Run route and how to apply this to your training.

Great South Run – get route ready

First things first – check out the route map on the Great South Run page (and download it so it’s even clearer) and this flyover video to really bring it to life. You’ll also receive an email with a link to your Event Guide with more detailed route information closer to the event – be sure you keep your eyes peeled.

Let’s take a look at what you can expect:

● The race begins on Clarence Esplanade with Clarence Pier visible ahead. The first few miles take you on a nautical-themed sightseeing tour of Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth Harbour and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, as well as the HM Naval Base.

● Next, get your road-running legs ready for around four miles of loops and lengthy stretches through residential and built-up areas. This part is far from boring, the crowds will keep your spirits up and remember to look out for your family and friends spectating.

● Then you’re back to Southsea and close to the coastline again. Head past the D Day Memorial, Canoe Lake and past the 8 mile marker onto East Esplanade. The final strait is all beachside, with scenic views. You will finish up at Southsea Castle – a fitting finale for a fantastic run. Claim those bragging rights!

Route need-to-knows and training tips:

Flat is fast. Another reason why so many Great South Runners keep coming back? It’s flat. And flat means PBs aplenty. But don’t skip the hill and strength training – if you’re aiming for a good time, it’ll really pay off on the day and (hopefully) translate into a top performance.

● Windy weather. Coastal running is often windier than inland, so it’s a good idea to train in as many seasons/weathers as you can. The weather on the day is in the hands of the weather gods!

● Entertainment. Along the route there will be plenty of music and entertainment to keep you motived. But, if you are not used to running with extra noise, we advise you bring your own headphones if you like getting lost in your playlist, to push you to that finish line.

Know your markers. Knowing what’s coming next can be a powerful motivator. Spotted Portsmouth and Southsea Train station? 3 mile mark. D-Day Memorial? 6.5 miles in the bank. If you’re local and can train along the route, even better, or remember to look at route map ahead of race day. Familiarity breeds confidence.

Other hints and hacks:

● Use tech to your advantage. Join our Strava Great South Run Group and let’s (virtually) cheer each other on.

● We’re really looking forward to seeing Portsmouth’s charity vests and we actively encourage crazy costumes. But whatever you’re wearing on your body, make sure your feet are taken care of with a comfortable, well-fitting pair of trainers – and please don’t wear new shoes on the day! (more advice on running shoes here).

● Don’t forget to share your training with us online – you can tag us on Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok. We can’t get enough of those #SweatySelfies.

Happy training – we’ll see you at the start line!
