Nothing compares to that event day energy. The training is done, the anticipation is building (as well as a few nerves) and there’s nothing left to do but lace up and get on that start line.
And if you’ve run or attended a Great Run series event before, you’ll know what a huge role supporters play in building that electric atmosphere. Every year, runners say how the crowds keep their legs pumping and propel them towards the finish line.”Great to see supporters out in force, whatever the weather…ensuring runners never feel alone,” said one runner this year – just one comment reflecting hundreds more.
So, if you’re planning to come along to a Great Run Series event this year and cheer entrants on, what do you need to know? Read on for our top tips on being the greatest Great Run supporter you can.
Plan ahead
Big events always involve a little disruption to the status quo. Make sure you plan where you’re going to support from and how you’re going to get there ahead of the big day. Your runner will receive a digital Event Guide with details of road closures and changes to public transport timetables ahead of race day and there’ll be more advice here on the Great Run website – make use of it.
Also consider what you’ll need to cope with a long day of standing in one spot – check the weather forecast, bring waterproofs or sun cream if needed, stock up with snacks and drinks and consider a stool or camping chair. You’ll need to recharge your energy levels in between all that cheering and high-fiving!
Download the tracking app
Our free app reliably tracks runner(s) and predicts times for passing key markers so you’ll know when to look out for friends, family, elites or celebrities. It also provides event day updates and allows you to view on-course runner photos from our professional photographers. Available from the Apple app store or Google Play here.
Make a sign
Great Run events are known for their bold, eye-catching – and sometimes amusing – signs. Our advice? Go big, go personal, go high-contrast and make runners feel motivated – or maybe smile. Some of our favourite funnies: “Chafe today, brag tomorrow”, “Run now, beer later!” and the slightly random “Pain is just French for bread”.
Make some noise
But save your hands – after a couple of hours of clapping you’ll start to feel it. Instead, bring some shakers, maracas, anything that makes a racket. Or opt for pom-poms – quieter, but no less attention-grabbing – and live your cheerleader fantasy!
Consider your outfit
You don’t want to blend in with the crowd – you need to be visible so your runner can reap the benefit of your support. So dress to stand out – perhaps match your runner or their cause, or just go crazy with colour and accessories. Deely boppers, balloons and face paints all go a long way towards getting you noticed, and your runner is guaranteed to appreciate your efforts.
Motivating mantras
What are you going to shout as runners pass by? Well, make use of the name on their run number or vest and give them a personalised shout out. Pair it with something powerful and motivational – “You’ve got this!”, “You’re a hero!” etc – for the ultimate feel-good boost.
Supply snacks
We’ve already talked about snacks to keep your energy levels up during a long day of supporting, but what about the runners? A well-timed orange slice of Jelly Baby can be a lifesaver to someone who’s flagging, so consider bringing a stash of runner-friendly snacks along.
Share the glory
Finally, make sure you pre-arrange a place to meet up with your runner afterwards to share the glory. May we suggest the Meeting Point beyond the finish line (the finish map in the Event Guide will show the location) before heading into the Après Zone for food, live entertainment and more.
