Who said grown-ups should have all the fun? Our Junior and Mini Great Run events are an opportunity to get the whole family moving and inspire the next generation of runners – and they’re becoming increasingly popular year on year.
But if it’s your first time, you might not know what to expect – and, for a small person, the unknown can feel pretty overwhelming. Signed up (or thinking of signing up!) for a Mini or Junior Run and wondering what to expect on the day? Our trusty guide has all the answers to your questions.
Ready, get set, let’s go!
What are Great Run Junior and Mini events?
Our Junior and Mini events give younger runners (aged 3-8 for Minis and 9-15 for Juniors, or up to 16 at the Junior Great North Run) a taste of that magic big event energy.
Although they might be shorter distances (1.5k for Minis, 2.5k for Juniors and 70 metres for the toddler dash), they’ve got the same electric atmosphere as our Great Run Series events, with incredible entertainment, local support and finisher goodies for all.
Who can take part?
Mini events welcome runners aged 3-8, who take part with a grown-up accompanying them, and Juniors aged 9-15 (or 16 at the Junior Great North Run) who can choose to run solo or with a grown-up. For the Great Bristol Family Run, adults and children aged 3+ can enter, although children aged 3-8 will need an adult to run with them.
What will the course be like?
This really depends on the location, but all of our routes are planned with safety and inclusivity in mind. Think flat, wide, secure courses on closed roads lined with cheering spectators and crowd-pleasing tunes on the speakers.
And the atmosphere?
We’ve mentioned cheering spectators, but that doesn’t really cover it. Runners and supporters are encouraged to dress up in crazy costumes, and face paint, deely boppers and big smiles are very welcome. There’s a high-energy soundtrack every step of the way and high fives everywhere you turn – and, if you’re lucky, a Jelly Baby or two. You might even spot Tyney, our tortoise mascot!
What do I get for taking part?
Just like the grownups, young runners get a super-cool t-shirt (sent before the event so you can wear it to run in) and an even cooler shiny finisher medal to add to – or start off – their collection. Wear them with pride!
How can I prepare?
Our website is packed with training advice, including these top tips here from our mascot, Tyney the Tortoise. And before the big day, you’ll receive an event guide by email. It tells you *everything* you need to know, from road closures and public transport advice to where to assemble, route maps and FAQs. Read it carefully!
What happens afterwards?
The fun doesn’t end at the finish line with Great Run. Join us for the afterparty which, depending on your location, will feature delicious food, drinks and entertainment. Here’s to the start of something special: a lifelong love of being active!
