The date has been confirmed for one of Manchester’s most iconic sporting events, the Morrisons Great Manchester Run, which will be staged on Sunday May 22nd next year.
Entries are now open for the 10k that has seen some of the world’s greatest athletes rub shoulders with people from all walks of life on the city centre streets.
Haile Gebrselassie, the legendary Ethiopian distance runner who broke an incredible 27 world records in his illustrious career, won the Great Manchester Run five times before making the 2015 event his last competitive race.
Featuring runners of all abilities, the Great Manchester Run has captured the imagination of the people of Greater Manchester, with over 75% of participants coming from this area. Since it was first staged in 2003, nearly 300,000 people have crossed the famous finish line in Deansgate completing over 1,800,000 miles between them, which equates to more than 73 laps of the globe.
An estimated £30 million has been raised by participants for a host of charitable causes, making the event one of the biggest fundraisers in the North West of England.
The event has attracted some of Britain’s highest profile personalities, with Dame Kelly Holmes, Amir Khan, John Bishop, Denise Welch, Anthony Cotton and Christopher Ecclestone all having taken part in recent years, with the BBC television cameras beaming the action live to the nation.
