Metro Customers Vote Great North Run Most Inspirational
Metro customers have voted the Great North Run ‘the most inspirational moment of the last 40 years in the North East’. The unprompted question saw 20% of respondents name the event as their most moving moment.
The iconic half marathon, which is the UKs biggest running event pipped the iconic Angel of the North to first place, with the installation of the Millennium Bridge and the Quayside rejuvenation also mentioned.
The event, which celebrates its own landmark 40th staging in 2020, has seen over a million runners from all over the world cross the finish line in its illustrious history. Stories of courage, determination and triumph against the odds have been a constant feature since it was first held in 1981.
The Great North Run has raised millions for charity over the years and according to research produced by Bluegrass, it has a positive economic benefit of almost £24 million for the region, excluding the additional benefits associated with TV coverage.

“The event has always been about the incredible people of the region, whether they’re taking part, volunteering or out supporting along the course. Wherever I go, people stop me to tell me about their own Great North Run experiences and what it means to them.
“When we first started out, we could never have imagined where this journey would take us. 40 years is a very special milestone and we can’t wait to celebrate with the people of the North East in 2020.”
This year’s Simplyhealth Great North Run takes place on Sunday the 8th September. Cricketing hero Mark Wood, from our World Cup winning England side will join Lionesses Steph Houghton and Jill Scott, who reached the semi-finals at the Women’s Football World Cup in France, on the official starters podium seeing tens of thousands of runners across the start line.
57,000 people are registered for the iconic 13.1 mile run which starts on the Central Motorway in Newcastle before making its way through Gateshead, finally finishing at the coast in South Shields. The event will be broadcast live on BBC One from 09.30 to 13.30, with highlights on BBC Two at 5pm.
