Little Heroes on a Mission: Thomas & Rocco
The theme of this year’s AJ Bell Junior and Mini Great Scottish Run is ‘Finding Your Superpower,’ and we’re celebrating some of the incredible young runners who embody this spirit.
Thomas (3) and Rocco (1), are gearing up for their first race on Saturday 5 October to honour their big cousin Jessie (7), who was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that primarily affects 1 in 10,000 females each year.
Thomas will be taking on the Mini Great Scottish Run and Rocco the toddler dash – a zippy 70 metres! Not bad for a boy who only took his first steps last week. Rett Syndrome is an extremely rare condition that many may not have heard of, but for those affected, it is life-altering. Rett syndrome is a neurological condition which most often strikes previously healthy children between their first and second birthday, leaving them unable to speak, walk and use their hands.
Jessie’s family are dedicated to supporting research and the Reverse Rett charity to finding a cure and they’re confident this is on the horizon. “Every single pound makes the world of difference,” says mum Charlotte, auntie to Jessie.
October is Rett awareness month. With that in mind Thomas and Rocco’s family have rallied together for this event. Thomas will be running with his cousin Rosie, sister to Jessie, while Uncle Adam tackles the half marathon. Although Jessie can’t be there in person, her spirit will be present, motivating her family every step of the way.
The family has been preparing with regular walks and runs to the park, and they’re excited to celebrate their efforts with a big family gathering afterward. As Charlotte reflects, “the boys are so excited to be a part of such a big event and to help support the finding of a cure for their big cousin, it’s going to be an emotional day for us all.”
