Great Birmingham Run Update
THE GREAT BIRMINGHAM RUN WILL NOT BE STAGED IN 2021
Organisers announce this year’s event has been cancelled.
The Great Run Company, organisers of the Great Birmingham Run due to be staged on Sunday 10 October, have announced the event will not take place in 2021. Both 10k and half marathon distances will instead be staged in May 2022.
Chief Executive Paul Foster said, “Unfortunately, we will not be able to stage the Great Birmingham Run as planned in October.”
“Despite the lifting of restrictions this week, we are still required to deliver safe events that are designed to minimise covid transmission amongst participants and spectators.
“In Birmingham this means facing some difficult decisions about the delivery of the event and the race experience for our customers.
“The impact of these potential changes would be an event that doesn’t meet our own high standards and we don’t think it would be one that runners would like to take part in.”
“As no cancellation insurance is currently available for large scale events, we also have to consider the implications of possible future restrictions.”
“We have therefore decided to postpone this year’s event and instead stage the 10k and Half Marathon in May 2022. This postponement allows us to deliver a much better event next Spring than we could in October, and we thank Birmingham City Council for their support in this difficult decision.”
“We’re sorry that we have to do this, but we hope everyone understands the decision”
All runners who have already purchased a place in the event will be automatically rolled over to 2022 and anyone who can’t make the 2022 date can apply for a refund. All participants will be contacted by email.
A virtual option, Great Birmingham Run Solo, is still open for entries. The entry fee includes a unique finishers medal and an online tracking tool to support runners through the challenge.
