A dad from Sheffield is running the half marathon to complete a year of physical challenges after an incredible weight loss.

Paul Greenway, 44, is raising money for Roundabout Homeless Charity and Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice in addition to his personal weight loss goal.

Paul said: “I started with the Sheffield 10k in 2016, when I was 23.5 stone.

“Since then, I have taken part in a number of events, including running, the Great Swim series, and a 44 mile bike ride.

“I decided to enter so many in such a short space of time because I knew I would have to push myself to complete them and lose the weight.

“It put more pressure on me to reach my goal if I committed to all these runs.

“I am currently 17 stone 10lbs and I'm attending Slimming World to keep me on the straight and narrow.”

Paul will be joined by thousands of runners on Sunday 10 September at the Simplyhealth Great North Run.

The weekend also includes the Junior and Mini Great North Run, the Great North 5k and the Great North CityGames on the Saturday.

Paul said: “This year, I set myself the goal of conquering the greatest half marathon by running the Great North Run.”

Paul's biggest motivator is not the number on the scales, but his five-year-old son, Max.

He said: “It may sound cliché, but the best thing pushing me to finish is seeing my little boy's face at the finish line and that feeling when he will say ‘well done, Daddy'.”

He added: “My main focus throughout this whole journey has been to become to the best role model for Max.

“He is actually completing a beginner's course in a running club after seeing what I can do and saying he wants to be like his dad.

“Crossing that finish line with show my son that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything in life.”
